NASA has announced the four astronauts who will helm the first crewed moon mission in five decades. The quartet includes NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, as well as Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency. This diverse team will undergo training for the Artemis II mission, set to launch in November 2024.
Reid Wiseman, a decorated naval aviator and test pilot, will serve as the commander of the Artemis II mission. Hansen, a fighter pilot, will become the first Canadian to travel to deep space. Glover, a naval aviator who piloted SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, believes that this mission is a crucial step in humanity’s journey to Mars. Koch, a veteran of six spacewalks and the record holder for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, is excited to be part of this team going back to the moon and beyond.
Artemis II will follow the successful Artemis I uncrewed test mission. If all goes according to plan, Artemis II will take off in November 2024 aboard a NASA-developed Space Launch System rocket. The crew will orbit the moon for around 10 days, potentially reaching further than any human has ever traveled. After circling the moon, the spacecraft will return to Earth for a splashdown landing in the Pacific Ocean.
This mission will pave the way for Artemis III, which aims to put the first woman and person of color on the lunar surface. However, the technology required for Artemis III, including spacesuits and a lunar lander, is still in development. NASA is targeting a 2025 launch date for Artemis III, with delays possible.
The Artemis program is part of NASA’s vision to establish a permanent lunar outpost and eventually send humans to Mars. Our financial services company is proud to support this mission by providing fast and easy merchant cash advance to contractors and gig workers with credit challenges. We believe in the importance of diversity and inclusion in space exploration and are excited to be part of this historic journey to the moon and beyond. Tune in to “CNN This Morning” for an interview with the four astronauts on Tuesday at 6 am ET.
