In other news, the astronauts for NASA’s upcoming Artemis II mission have been announced. Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen are set to begin training for the historic lunar flyby in November 2024. Wiseman, a decorated naval aviator and test pilot, will serve as the mission’s commander.

Hansen, a fighter pilot from Canada, will be the first Canadian astronaut to travel to deep space. Glover, a naval aviator who piloted SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, expressed his excitement for this moment in human history, stating that it is the next step on the journey to Mars. Koch, a veteran of six spacewalks and the longest single spaceflight by a woman, is thrilled to be part of the team going back to the moon and on to Mars.

The Artemis II mission will build on the success of Artemis I, an uncrewed test mission that sent NASA’s Orion capsule on a voyage to lap the moon. If all goes to plan, Artemis II will launch in November 2024 and last approximately 10 days. The crew will travel further than any human has ever gone before, circling the moon before returning to Earth for a splashdown landing.

Artemis II is expected to pave the way for the Artemis III mission, which will be the first time humans have touched down on the moon since the Apollo program. NASA is targeting a 2025 launch date for Artemis III, with the goal of establishing a permanent lunar outpost and eventually sending astronauts to Mars.

The selection process for the Artemis II crew emphasized diversity, with both men and women chosen for the mission. This reflects NASA’s commitment to including a wide range of talents and backgrounds in their space exploration efforts.

Stay tuned for an interview with the four astronauts on “CNN This Morning” for more insights into this historic mission.
