In recent news, Finland’s left-wing Prime Minister Sanna Marin has conceded defeat in the parliamentary election, with the right-wing National Coalition Party (NCP) claiming victory. The NCP, a pro-business party, is expected to secure 48 seats in parliament, narrowly surpassing the nationalist Finns Party and Marin’s Social Democrats.

NCP leader, Petteri Orpo, has vowed to “fix Finland” and its economy as he prepares to form a coalition to secure a majority in parliament. Although Marin’s tenure as prime minister is coming to an end, she remains popular among many Finns, especially young moderates. However, her government’s public spending and perceived lack of frugality have drawn criticism from conservatives.

The NCP has consistently led in polls for the past two years and promises to tackle excessive spending and control public debt. Orpo has emphasized the need to address Finland’s economic resilience, particularly in light of Europe’s energy crisis caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine and the rising cost of living.

Both Orpo and Marin have expressed their willingness to negotiate with different groups to form a majority government, but Marin has ruled out partnering with the Finns Party, whom she has labeled as “openly racist.” The Finns Party’s main objectives include reducing immigration from developing countries outside the European Union and implementing austerity measures to curb deficit spending.

Marin’s foreign policy actions, including advocating for NATO membership following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have also made headlines. Finland’s accession to NATO is expected to be completed in the coming days after receiving approval from all 30 members of the Western defense alliance.
