The astronauts who have been chosen for the first crewed moon mission in fifty years were announced on Monday, gearing up for the historic Artemis II lunar flyby set to launch in November 2024. The team consists of NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency.

Wiseman, a 47-year-old naval aviator, will be the commander of the Artemis II mission. Hansen, a fighter pilot from Canada, will make history as the first Canadian to travel to deep space. Glover, a naval aviator from California, has logged thousands of flight hours across various missions. Koch, a veteran of spacewalks, holds a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman.

Artemis II is expected to follow the success of Artemis I and will launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida in November 2024, sending the crew beyond the moon for a 10-day journey before returning to Earth. This mission will set the stage for Artemis III, aiming to put the first woman and person of color on the moon.

The Artemis program is NASA’s plan to establish a permanent lunar outpost, with the ultimate goal of sending humans to Mars. The crew diversity in the Artemis II mission signifies a shift from historical missions, emphasizing the importance of a varied team in space exploration.
