Nearly a decade ago, while on assignment in Botswana, Green conceived the idea behind the project, aimed at encouraging people to photograph wildlife rather than hunt them.
The book features the work of 144 globally recognized wildlife photographers from various regions worldwide. Curating these images was a meticulous process that spanned nearly two years. According to Green, these images are not only beautiful but also creatively compiled in one book, showcasing species that are at risk of extinction.
The UN reports that nature is declining at an alarming rate, with approximately one million animal and plant species facing extinction. The “New Big 5,” all endangered, represent what is happening in the natural world and serve as ambassadors for wildlife conservation efforts.
In addition to raising awareness of the threats to wildlife, the book also presents potential solutions. Essays within the book delve into the advantages of rewilding and the role of indigenous communities in conservation efforts. A section on endangered species, from bees to blue whales, underscores the severe threat climate change poses to wildlife beyond the “New Big 5.”
World-renowned conservationist Jane Goodall, who contributed the afterword to the book, emphasized the need for immediate action to heal the harm inflicted on the natural world. She hopes that the images will inspire people to engage with these iconic species and contribute to a world where wildlife can prosper for future generations.
