In recent news, it has been revealed that the Chinese spy balloon that entered the US earlier this year was able to gather imagery and signals intelligence from US military sites. The balloon was able to transmit this information back to Beijing in real time, and it is still uncertain whether the Chinese government was able to wipe the balloon’s data as it received it. This raises concerns about the intelligence that may have been gathered by the balloon that the US is still unaware of.

However, the US intelligence community is not overly concerned about this information, as the capabilities of the balloon are not much more sophisticated than Chinese satellites that orbit similar locations. Additionally, the US government knew the path of the balloon and was able to protect sensitive sites and censor signals before the balloon could intercept them.

The FBI is currently examining the balloon and has gained additional insight into how the device worked, including its software algorithms and design. The National Security Council at the White House and the Pentagon have yet to provide comment on this development.

The balloon made its way into US airspace in late January, crossing through Alaska, Canada, and eventually hovering over Montana. The US believed that the balloon was attempting to surveil sensitive military sites, which led to its eventual shooting down off the East Coast on February 4. This incident further escalated tensions between the US and China.

Despite China claiming that the balloon was merely a weather balloon off course, the US has been assessing the possibility that it was deliberately maneuvered into the US by the Chinese government. China did have some ability to maneuver the balloon, and once it was over Montana, it appeared to take advantage of its position to collect intelligence.
