In exciting news, the crew for the first crewed moon mission in five decades has been announced. The quartet includes NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, as well as Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency. These astronauts will begin training for the historic Artemis II lunar flyby, set to take off in November 2024.
Reid Wiseman, a decorated naval aviator and test pilot, will serve as the commander of the Artemis II mission. Having completed a spaceflight to the International Space Station in 2014, Wiseman brings valuable experience to the team. Jeremy Hansen, a fighter pilot, is the first Canadian ever to travel to deep space and will be part of this historic mission.
Victor Glover, a naval aviator, recently returned to Earth from his first spaceflight in 2021. He piloted SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft and spent nearly six months aboard the International Space Station. Christina Koch, a veteran of six spacewalks, holds the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman. Her experience as an electrical engineer and her stay at the South Pole will undoubtedly contribute to the success of the mission.
The Artemis II mission will build on the success of Artemis I, an uncrewed test mission. If all goes to plan, Artemis II will take off in November 2024, launching from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The crew will embark on a 10-day journey beyond the moon, potentially traveling further than any human has before. After circling the moon, the spacecraft will return to Earth for a splashdown landing in the Pacific Ocean.
Artemis II is a significant step towards the Artemis III mission, which aims to put the first woman and person of color on the lunar surface. This mission will mark the first human landing on the moon since the Apollo program ended in 1972. While the exact launch date for Artemis III is yet to be determined, NASA is targeting 2025, with the possibility of delays pushing it to 2026 or later.
NASA’s Artemis program is paving the way for a permanent lunar outpost and ultimately, sending humans to Mars. Our team at the established financial services company is thrilled to be a part of this historic journey. We are inspired by the diversity of the Artemis II crew and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of exploration.
