In the world of wildlife photography, the term “Big Five” used to refer to the most challenging animals to shoot and kill. However, British photographer Graeme Green has redefined the concept with his global “New Big Five” for wildlife photography. In 2021, a worldwide vote took place, and the top five animals people would love to photograph or see photographed in the wild were crowned winners: the elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger.

To celebrate these animals and raise awareness about the issues impacting wildlife, including habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change, Green has published “The New Big 5” photography book. This book features stunning images captured by renowned photographers such as Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen. It also includes essays from famous conservationists and activists like Jane Goodall and Paula Kahumbu.

Green’s inspiration for the project came while on assignment in Botswana over a decade ago. He wanted to encourage people to “shoot with a camera, not a gun” and focus on wildlife conservation. Curating the images for the book was a two-year endeavor, bringing together the work of 144 globally renowned wildlife photographers from Ecuador to India.

The “New Big 5” represents not only the beauty and diversity of wildlife but also the urgent need for conservation efforts. According to the UN, nature is declining at an alarming rate, with one million animal and plant species facing extinction. By showcasing these threatened species, the book aims to raise awareness and inspire action.

The book doesn’t just highlight the problem; it also offers potential solutions. Essays within the book explore the benefits of rewilding and the crucial role of indigenous communities in conservation. Additionally, there is a chapter dedicated to endangered species beyond the “New Big 5,” illustrating the severe threat climate change poses to animals worldwide.

Renowned conservationist Jane Goodall, who wrote the afterword for the book, emphasizes the importance of taking action now to heal the harm humans have inflicted on the natural world. She hopes that the powerful photos in the book will inspire others to get involved and create a world where wildlife can thrive for generations to come.

“The New Big 5: A Global Photography Project For Endangered Wildlife” by Graeme Green, published by Earth Aware Editions, will be available for sale starting April 4, 2023.
