Ryyan Alshebl, a Syrian refugee who arrived in Germany in 2015, has emerged victorious in a mayoral election in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Alshebl, who hails from As Suwayda, ran as an independent candidate in Ostelsheim and secured 55.41% of the votes, defeating two German candidates. The 29-year-old expressed his delight at the outcome, describing it as “sensational.” According to Alshebl, Ostelsheim’s open-mindedness and cosmopolitanism stand as an example for the rest of Germany. Alshebl, who will assume his post in June, is the first individual of Syrian descent to hold such a position. Despite facing some opposition during his campaign, Alshebl received a warm welcome from the residents of Ostelsheim. The state’s Integration Minister, Manne Lucha, expressed hope that Alshebl’s success would inspire other individuals with migration backgrounds to run for political office. Born to a schoolteacher and agricultural engineer in Syria, Alshebl lived a carefree life until the age of 20 when the Syrian government faced protests that escalated into a devastating war. As a result, Alshebl was confronted with the decision of joining the Syrian army or seeking refuge elsewhere. Opting for the latter, Alshebl made the dangerous journey to Europe, eventually arriving in Germany. In the years that followed, he worked in the administration of Althengstett town hall, gaining valuable experience that he intends to draw upon as mayor. Alshebl’s priorities include enhancing digital access to public services, implementing flexible childcare, and addressing climate concerns. As a member of the Green Party, Alshebl is committed to promoting sustainable practices in Ostelsheim.
